Influx of Synthetic Drugs Into the United States and a Young Scientist’s Impact

Synthetic drugs continuously enter the United States, such as Novel psychoactive substances (NPS) and Precursor chemicals, through international mail and across the border.
When seized drugs are collected there is workflow that is followed to process the substance. First off, this begins with interdiction and collection of sample (typically white powder), followed by instrumental analysis with the GC/MS/MS and LC QTOF-MS for indentification and NPS determination. Additionally, NMR testing is done as a confirmatory method for the chemical structure, and all reportings are submitted for future monitoring within the field.
